FSTC Chairman Won Services to Science & Engineering Award

Professor Mohamed El-Gomati OBE, Chairman of the Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation (FSTC), was among the winners honoured of the British Muslim Awards, which took place at the Sheridan Suite, Manchester on 29th January 2013. He was gratified with the award Services to Science & Engineering presented by Mosaic.

The first British Muslim Awards (BMA) was a unique occasion to recognise a wide range of achievements which cover various aspects of society including business, charity, sport, science, arts and culture. With 500 attendees, the evening was one of celebration, reflecting the significant role that Britain's Muslims play in society. The event honoured the success and achievements of British Muslimss, groups and business people and highlighted the significant role Muslims play in society.

In 2012, Professor Mohamed El-Gomati was made an OBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the New Year's Honours List.

Professor El-Gomati has been a trustee and Vice-Chairman of FSTC for many years. He is an advisor to a number of UK Universities and charities and speaks on the contribution of Muslims in Science, Technology and Civilisation.

Professor El-Gomati obtained his BSc degree in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Tripoli in 1970 and went on to study for his MSc in California and for his PhD from York University, UK. He became a Professor in Electronics at the University of York in 1997. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, UK. His research interests are in Surface Science and Electron Optics with particular emphasis on the development of novel instrumentation for nanostructure and analysis.

Ann internationally renowned scientist and researcher based at York University, Mohamed El-Gomati has written more than 200 articles, patents, and books. He has excelled in the field of novel instrumentation, developing and building several state-of-the-art instruments in surface analysis and microscopy. He has acted as a scientific referee to the British Government and UNESCO. Among his inventions are the world's first multi-spectral analytical microscope and the world's first parallel electron energy analyser for surface analysis. In 2009, Mohamed El-Gomati was awarded the Fazlur Rahman award for excellence in Engineering, Science and Technology by the Muslim News (read The Ninth Annual Ceremony Recognises the Very Best of British Muslim Achievements). Professor El-Gomati is a prolific scientist who continues to publish extensively in his area of research (read here the list of his latest 30 publications). He is also a lecturer on Muslim heritage in UK and elsewhere. Among his noteworthy publications and lectures, we mention Muslims and The Frontiers of Knowledge in the 21st Century (28th and 29th of July 2009 in Kuala Lumpur), The Clock of Civilisations (in the BA festival of science, 12 September 2007), and The Miracle of Light (co-authored, published by UNESCO in 2005).
