MHAG Meeting at the Royal Society, London

The Muslim Heritage Awareness Group (MHAG), a consulting network to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC), held its meeting on Tuesday 14 July 2009 at the Royal Society, Carlton House Terrace, in London.

Following the usual format, the first session of proceedings started with a light lunch at 12.30 followed by presentations from experts on the theme selected for the meeting followed by discussion time.

The theme for this meeting was Environment and Muslim Heritage. The session was chaired by Dr Anne Maria Brennan, from London South Bank University.

The speakers in this session were:

  • Sir Crispin Tickell, an eminent career diplomat and expert on climate change
  • Martin Palmer, Secretary General of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation
  • Dr David Manning, Deputy Director: Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies
  • Dr Paul Berkman, Head, Arctic Ocean Geopolitics Programme, Scott Polar Research Institute, Judge Business School, University of Cambridge and Fulbright Distinguished Scholar and Research Professor at Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, University of California.

Discussions and short presentations were also given by:

Prof. Charles Savage, Mr Peter Raymond, Prof. Mohammed El-Gomati, Prof. Rabieh A. Haleem, Dr Suhair Al-Qurashi, Dr Geoffrey Roper, Mr. John K Whittlesey, Prof. Rafid Al-Khaddar, Dr Anne-Maria Brennan, Dr Subhi Azzawi, Dr Silke Ackermann, Mr. Farikh Mirza, Dr Liz Bell, Ms Yasmin Khan, Mr Maurice Coles, Ms Suhad Jarrar-Browne, Baron Junaid Bhatti, Dr Mahmoud Akef, Dr Salim Ayduz, Mrs Margaret Morris and Prof. Salim T S Al-Hassani.

The last hour of the meeting was spent on the MHAG business of promoting Muslim heritage awareness for social cohesion and world peace and in discussing funding opportunities.
