Hamid Al-Naimiy

  Prof. Hamid Al-Naimiy, UAE. BSc in Physics from the University of Baghdad, Iraq, in 1971.

Prof. Hamid Al-Naimiy was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Sharjah (2006-08), Dean of the College of Sciences from 2008 to-date, and Acting Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He was also Dean of Astronomy and Space Science Institute at Ahl-al-Bayt University, Jordan (1994-2001). He has also chaired several departments of physics in different Arab universities (the last one, the Chair of Physics department at the United Arab Emirates University, 2002-06), and was Director General of Space and Astronomy Research in the Iraqi Scientific Research Council (1981-89).

Talking of his long journey of academic experience and expertise, Prof. Al-Naimiy writes:

"My scientific experience extends to many fields, including physics, astronomy and astrophysics, and Arab Astronomy Heritage. My contributions to the field of astronomy and space sciences have been recognised by many regional, national, and international bodies. I have also received many appreciation letters, awards and citations; the last one was the Khalifa Award for the Higher Education for the academic year 2008-09. In addition, I have run, directed, and organised numerous conferences, workshops, and symposia. My services to the local community have been characterised by devotion to the scientific spirit and by attempting to bridge the gap between the university and ordinary people in the aim of promoting the university's interactive role and engagement with society".

Highlights of a life time of academic and research experience include:

Teaching experience: He taught many courses in physics, astrophysics and space sciences for graduate and undergraduate students in different universities; designed new courses and curricula in the field of physics, astronomy and space sciences; and supervised around 30 PhD and MSc theses.

Research: He published more than 90 papers in refereed regional as well as international journals; published more than 22 books, and edited three conference proceedings; more importantly, he was Editor-in-Chief of two journals and member of the editorial board of many other journals.

Scientific Unions and Societies: He was the founder of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS) in 1998, and served as the Vice President from 1998 to 2004, and President from 2004 to-date; he was also the President of the Iraqi Physics & Mathematics Society (1983-89) and General Secretary of the Arab Physics and Mathematics Union; he held the position of Vice President of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences, Education and Culture (1986-89); he is member of many international Unions and societies and member of the organising scientific committees of UN/NASA/ESA/JAXA workshops on basic space sciences from 1998 to date.

Media: He has appeared (in interviews) in hundreds of shows and presentations on TV channels such as MBC, Al-Jazeera, Al-'Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and certain channels in Jordan and Iraq.
