To welcome in 2011, the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC) has chosen to give its Muslim Heritage Newsletter a new look. With the name FSTC NEWS, this newsletter encompasses all our projects and subsidiaries. The newsletter is split into three main sections based on our core bodies: 1001 Inventions, CE4CE and FSTC. By including the work of the entire group, we hope to keep our supporters informed of our successes and developments on a bi-monthly basis.

In this issue you will learn about the successful launch of the 1001 Inventions exhibition in New York after a great run in Turkey during which new Muslim Heritage Awareness Network Turkey (MHANT) was formed; awards received by the Library of Secrets film, the 1001 Inventions initiative and Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani himself; Curriculum Enrichment for the Common Era?s new website, recent talks and film competition project; and the recent articles published on Muslimheritage.com.

    It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague Peter Raymond MBE, founding Trustee of The Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC) UK, the parent organisation of 1001 Inventions and Curriculum Enrichment (CE4CE). Peter also founded and chaired the Muslim Heritage Awareness Group (MHAG) of FSTC. Read more...
    Professor Al-Hassani Receives NYSci Award for Global Science
    At the New York Hall of Science?s (NYSci) annual gala dinner on 16th November 2010, Professor Salim Al-Hassani became the first ever recipient of the NYSci Global Science Award. 600 VIPs came to the event and 1001 Inventions was promoted by a dramatic theatre performance and a large model of Al-Jazari?s elephant clock.     Collaboration with Khalifa University to Create Science Heritage Centre
    A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Khalifa University in the UAE to promote greater recognition and appreciation of science and invention in Muslim civilisation and its influence on today. The first joint project to be introduced in Abu Dhabi will be an expansion of the Khalifa University Discovery Centre by introducing a Muslim Heritage Science and Engineering exhibition, partly based on the 1001 Inventions initiative.     1001 Inventions Book, Turkish Edition Launched
    The Turkish translation of our 1001 Inventions book was launched in conjunction with the tour of our 1001 Inventions exhibition in Istanbul. Entitled 1001 Icat: Dünyamizda Islam Miras? the book was produced in both hardback and paperback versions and sold out within the first four weeks, requiring a reprint of thousands of more books to supply the demand across Turkey?s book stores.
    Muslim Heritage Awareness Network Turkey is Established
     

    On Friday 1st October 2010, thirty Turkish academics and public figures met to launch the Muslim Heritage Awareness Network Turkey (MHANT) at Marmara University in Istanbul. The meeting was hosted by Professor Zafer Gul of Marmara University. Professor Salim Al-Hassani, Mr Peter Fell and Dr Anne-Maria Brennan attended as representatives of FSTC. Read more...

    1001 Inventions Launched at the New York Hall of Science
    After highly successful runs receiving 800,000 visitors in London and Istanbul combined, 1001 Inventions made its United States premiere at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) on 4th December 2010, receiving thousands of visitors in the first week along with wide media coverage including pick of the week in Time Out.     1001 Inventions Receives the MOSAIC Science-Technology Award
    The 1001 Inventions initiative has been presented with the prestigious Science and Technology Award at an awards ceremony organised by Prince Charles? MOSAIC charity on 23rd November 2010. More than 400 guests attended the gala event hosted by the BBC?s Mishal Husain and Asad Ahmed and attended by HRH Prince El-Hassan bin Talaal of Jordan and his family. Read more...
    1001 Inventions Film Wins at Cannes
    The 1001 Inventions Library of Secrets film starring Sir Ben Kingsley received the Gold Award for Best Education Film at the Cannes Corporate Media Awards on 14th October 2010. This marks the films 21st award to date. Read more...

    Istanbul Tour Ends on a High
    The 1001 Inventions exhibition was launched in Istanbul on 18th August 2010 with a grand opening by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Over its seven week stay the exhibition received a record breaking 400,000 visitors, many of whom were young school children. The exhibition closed by handing over to New York with a grand gala ceremony during which visitors could soar above Istanbul as Hezarfen once had. Read more...


    CE4CE?s Website Goes Live
    The CE4CE website became live in December 2010, at www.ce4ce.org. The website is designed to provide an easily accessible and welcoming public face for the company. The site makes available all teaching resources and educational materials, and provides access to the company?s services. We intend to keep the site fresh with news and events, and hope to make it stronger as we receive more feedback from users.
    Project Mosaic Young Filmmakers YouTube Competition
    On Monday 17th January 2011, CE4CE worked with boys from year 9 ? 11 at Burnage Media Arts College to create a 2 minute film to enter into Project Mosaic?s YouTube competition. The competition gives young people a greater voice in promoting tolerance, diversity and British values, in creating understanding amongst people from different backgrounds - whether racial, ethnic, religious, national or economic - and in combating prejudice and extremism.     Cultural Understanding in Lessons Workshop
    On 3rd November 2010, Maurice Coles and Ayshah Ismail delivered a workshop to educational consultants from Luton at the Putteridge Bury Conference Centre on the importance of faith based identity and the role CE4CE and its resources play in encompassing cultural understanding within lessons.
